You guys think that one of the good 200cc intake runner size sbc heads would be too big for a 383 street motor? 1968 Chevelle hydraulic roller cam with 235 to 240 at .050 duration, 4.11 gears, TH-350, dual plane intake, 750 cfm dp,. Or do you think taht one of the 170cc to 180cc size heads would be better?

406 sbc vs 383. The bigger cubes would last longer at the 500hp mark but you can get it out of the 383--just a little more radical. The 383 will have to make 1.3 hp per cube and the 427 will have to make only 1.17 hp per cube. As for cost, you have most of the 500hp 383 already.

Here's what can be done: 475 to 500 HP on pump gas using factory block, crank, rods and heads for around $2,000.00. You're going to buy pistons, cam, bearings, etc and have some machine work done anyway right. The standard rebuild stuff should be all you need. Of course we won't include a carb, distributor, headers, etc.
