Yesterday Me and my hunting buddy ventured north, starting from the Northern lake outpost. We explored a pretty large chunk of the map while we were up there and interestingly enough all we found were a few rabbits and ducks but throughout 90% of the trip we didnt see a single sign of life. At one point we did find an Elk print which we tracked to the animal, took some shots at it before it ...
The only requirements that I know of are that you are within the orange area on your map when you have that quest selected, and that you do it at night. The last I saw referenced, night time is considered from 19.00 to 5.00. The animal has to be shot in the orange area of the map.

It's frustrating that you are doing a mission and you spend days (real life days) walking around a mission area to not find even a footprint of the animal you're searching at any time of the day.
