It has to be tightened until it clicks. Other, more serious faults can cause this indication, but the loose cap issue is widespread. Gas cap seems tight., 2004 SC430, Check engine light comes on, w/VSC and VSC of light. My mechanic has run the codes and changed my gas cap. Tank gets to 1/2 full, the lights come on again.
