Ram 2500 stuck in 4th gear

Oct 19, 2018 · 2010 Dodge Ram 2500. Asked by Visitor in Westminster, SC on October 19, 2018. Stopped at drive thru and cut off truck to hear (diesel ) when restarted motor and put into drive , showed transmission in 4th gear. cut engine off , waited a few minutes and restarted went back to drive all back to normal but engine light remains on.

Ive had a similar problem in a chevy. In my instance the shifter actually jumped out of the grooves between the shift forks. You can take the console off around the shifter and pull the boot up and take the four bolts loose that hold the shifter to the tranny. when you pull up the shifter you will see the grooves that the shifter is supposed to go in.The solenoids are a possibility and hopefully the problem will be found with a component such as that or the electronic controls. All other causes are clutch and/or hydraulic circuit related and thus would require rebuilding the unit (not difficult though).
