Nickel finish was fairly common on model 19s, but if it looked good shape when you bought and is now flaking I`d consider it suspect. But there are some kinds of cleaning solvents that are hard on nickel finish. A model 19 .357 Magnum is built on a slightly larger K frame with adjustable sights and could have a 2 1/2". 3", 4", (5" rare), or 6" barrel with shrouded ejector housing but the vast majority were 4". They were introduced in 1955 and in 1957 S&W started using the Model designation Model 19. Smith & Wesson introduced the .38 Hand Ejector Model in 1899, which later became the M&P or Victory Model, then the Model 10.
